45s.com -- Search for Songs by Year - 1972

In 1972, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, and Chuck Berry reappeared on the charts after long absences.  John Lennon asked for U.S. citizenship to avoid deportation.  Diana Ross was nominated for an Oscar in Lady Sings the Blues.  In my opinion, 1972 wasn't a very good year for pop/rock music -- at least as I scan the list of hits from 1972, I do not find many personal favorites.  The absolute highlight of the year was November 20, 1972 when our daughter, Brittany, was born.

The top songs in 1972 were:

American Pie -- Don McLean
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face -- Roberta Flack
Alone Again (Naturally) -- Gilbert O'Sullivan
Without You -- Nilsson
I Gotcha -- Joe Tex
Let's Stay Together -- Al Green
The Candy Man -- Sammy Davis, Jr.
I Can See Clearly Now -- Johnny Nash
A Horse With No Name -- America
Me And Mrs. Jones -- Billy Paul
