John Lennon and Paul McCartney were prolific songwriters. Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England. He formed "The Beatles" in the late 1950's -- originally known as The Quarrymen, Johnny & The Moondogs, The Rainbows, and The Silver Beatles.
Lennon had 72 charted hits as a performer with the Beatles and 19 charted hits as a solo performer and with his wife, Yoko Ono. Lennon was shot to death outside his apartment in New York City on December 8, 1980.
